The Hands of Ulster & Abkhazia

The people of Ulster are not the only folks on earth to use the hand as their national symbol. The people of Abkhazia (who recently gained their independence from Georgia) also employ the symbol on their flag and other national emblems. In the attached picture, notice the white hand on the Abkhazian lady's dress, which has her national colours on it. The stars around the hand represent the historic regions of the country.

  1. Interesting. In the same region I believe is Belarus which has the Flax flower as its national flower. In Ulster the Flax flower is used as the symbol for the Ulster Assembly and has appeared on the £1 coin representing Ulster.

  2. I found your website because I am interested in DNA research & Abkhazia comes up on our family's test results some times. We don't have any known ancestry recently from this region, but we do have Scots-Irish ancestry. I wonder if this similarity is more than just a coincidence?
