Protestants blamed for Belfast violence in US media
Despite admitting that it was unclear which side started the violence in Belfast yesterday, The Washington Post (a pro-Establishment media outlet which in the US as regards Ulster translates as anti-Protestant) ran as its headline: "Protestant rioters attack Catholic homes as sectarian unrest flares on streets of Belfast." The headline makes it seems as though the majority culture is aggressive and oppressive while the minority culture is the victim of oppression (those of us in Dixie are quiet familiar with this media tactic). Of course, the reality of the situation is not nearly as clear.

Par for the course
ReplyDeleteJust to add the trouble actually started on Saturday night. This has been verified by the police. When the police said that the Monday night trouble was orchestrated by the UVF they were of course correct.
ReplyDeleteI think the newspapers should look beyond what they see in front of them. But of course they never do.
A bit more trouble on Friday night but on a smaller scale. Police say paramilitaries were not involved.
ReplyDeleteJust to clarify the point I was making was that given that the trouble started on Saturday, the Monday night trouble seems to have been in response to this.
